Mustard -- Brassica species
Christ suggests that we only need faith the size of a mustard seed in one of His most famous parables (Matthew 13:31-32). Mustard was grown for its oil, used as animal food, and as a seasoning in Bible times. The seed is very tiny but grows to the size of a small tree in the climate of the Holy Lands. In northern climates, it acts as an herbaceous plant.
Cultivation
Mustard needs an acidic soil with a pH of 4.2-6 for best growth. The soil should be rich, well drained, and located in full sun. Don't let this plant go to seed or you will have mustard throughout your landscape.
Bible References
Matthew 13:31-32: Another parable put he forth unto them, saying, The kingdom of heaven is like to a grain of mustard seed, which a man took, and sowed in his field: Which indeed is the least of all seeds: but when it is grown, it is the greatest among herbs, and becometh a tree, so that the birds of the air come and lodge in the branches thereof.
