Rue -- Ruta graveolens or R. chalepnsis

Two species of rue are native to the Mediterranean region. This plant was used to flavor food or as medicine. It is mentioned in Luke 11:42. Historians tell us the Greeks and Romans used it to protect themselves against diseases. They carried bouquets of rue whenever they walked outdoors and also, spread it on floors of their public buildings.

Cultivation This plant is very winter hardy to -40°F. In its native habitat, it grows on warm, dry slopes, in screes (chipped rocks and other debris that collects at the base of mountains), or on rock-covered plains. Many people are sensitive to the sap of this plant. Wear gloves when pruning it. This plant is poisonous although it was used in herbal medicine in the past.
